Nothing’s been written, nothing’s been looked at; all you’ve got is a subject, a page that is blank as well as the instructions to “write.” As an old school that is high teacher, I’m convinced the anxiety of being unsure of what to write is excatly why a lot of of my students hold back until the last possible minute to write an essay. Under some pressure, no choice is had by you but to get going. But at that time, it’s too late to write the best essay you might’ve written.
The clear answer would be to soon start as as possible. Apply this five step prep process to virtually any essay you write.
Free-write
Any writing is progress. Jot down anything concerning the topic you’ve been assigned, even if it’s just questions you have about what the prompt means. Jot down anything. Don’t censor yourself; just ensure you get your brain firing. You can draw pictures, symbols, or a rudimentary mind map (more on that below) if you are visual,.
Exploratory Research
If you are writing a study paper or anything requiring support to back your points up, do exploratory research. It will acquaint you with all the topic and perhaps reveal ideas you’ve gotn’t thought of yet.
On the computer, Google Scholar or Wikipedia are good places to get going. Simply look for the topics and ideas mentioned when you look at the prompt and spending some time doing a bit of good internet surfing that is old-fashioned. If anything jumps out it down, add it to a word document, take a screenshot, or bookmark the page—you may want to use it later for your essay at you, jot. If you’re into old-fashioned research (or if your essay is mostly about a specific book), check out the library, look up related topics when you look at the catalog, and browse shelves associated with your subject. I found came from trying to find a specific book and then stumbling upon two or three even more awesome ones on the shelf nearby when I wrote my dissertation, some of the best resources.
